Surviving Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma

Cancer related illnesses are continuing to increase despite the prediction that the death rate may have peaked. The chances of surviving asbestos related cancer with current advances in treatment remain very slim as the fibres cause pulmonary toxicity, which is not fully understood.

If diagnosed with asbestos mesothelioma there a number of recognised standard treatments available including radiology and chemotherapy. These are well document procedures, however they may not suit everyone. Alternative treatments are available, which require consultation with your Doctor to know the risks before choosing an option. Be aware of the facts and keep asking questions.

Many of the asbestos cases relating to high exposure of asbestos have declined, known as asbestosis. The death rate still continues to rise relating to asbestos mesothelioma that is mainly associated with low and sporadic exposure to asbestos. In 2007 within the United Kingdom alone more than 2,300 people were diagnosed with mesothelioma and currently it is over 2,600. Approximately 9 out of 10 mesothelioma cases will occur in those aged 60 and over.

Asbestos has been used within the building trade up until 1999, when white asbestos was banned in the form of asbestos gaskets and corrugated cement roofs, with Brown asbestos being banned in 1992. Asbestos mesothelioma can have an incubation period of up to 40 years. Therefore, we will see asbestos related illnesses continue for another 20 years or more.

In the United Kingdom asbestos has been prohibited from being used and the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 is there to protect the worker and the employer. When abroad there may not be the same level of protection. A table has been published giving the prohibition dates within many countries, (see page two of the website), however there may not be the same control measures in place for maintaining them. If you suspect asbestos, walk away and report it. Asbestos materials need to be sealed at all times.

To learn more about asbestos mesothelioma, its diagnosis and its treatments please visit the NHS for treatment within the UK. In the USA, “Surviving mesothelioma” is a useful resource for learning to live with mesothelioma.

“Surviving mesothelioma” has for a limited time, free copies of their book "Surviving Mesothelioma" available to newly diagnosed mesothelioma patients. Please visit their website to apply for a free copy before they run out. Click here to receive yours.
